### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, ambiguity, and skepticism regarding what was ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not an experience my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the major obstacles I encountered early on was initiating friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a significant worry for you. On my initial day in student accommodation, just prior to the beginning of term, I spent an entire day in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was a few brief conversations with individuals who were in similar situations.

So, what has been my takeaway? Making that first move is invariably worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another challenge I had to navigate was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from first to second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience being overwhelmed and second-guess your capabilities, particularly when witnessing peers study and seem to grasp concepts more swiftly than you.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty with a concept, chances are others are facing the same struggles. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to pursue support is one of the most crucial abilities you can cultivate during your first year.

#### The Significance of Seeking Assistance

This brings me to another vital lesson: the remarkable support system within the Materials department. The faculty truly wants students to thrive and recognizes the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our queries and providing guidance.

I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the outset of the year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which became incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can tremendously enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was frequently unwarranted. There are abundant support systems established, ranging from staff to fellow students, to assist you in confronting challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never solitary, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic pressures with thoroughly enjoying my university experience.

If you are on the verge of beginning your own journey at Imperial, embrace the adventure, take those bold steps, and remember that support is constantly accessible. You’ve got this!
