**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase of my life was intimidating. However, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was the process of making friends. If you are a prospective student reading this, it is likely a significant source of your anxiety as well. On my first day moving into student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently share that I have built some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals who shared my nervousness.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that taking that initial risk is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable right off the bat, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, just stay true to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals in the course and across the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others study and seemingly thrive. However, one aspect that aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are feeling the same.

The critical lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial understanding to embrace during your first year. Whether reaching out to fellow students or faculty, asking for help is vital.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

On that note, the teaching staff in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely wish for every student to succeed and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect more deeply with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My advice? Make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. There is an abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the enjoyment of university life with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
