**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly reserved and timid self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

A major hurdle I encountered early in my journey was the endeavor to forge friendships. If you’re an aspiring student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into university accommodations—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room.

Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it only required me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with those facing similar circumstances.

So, what have I gleaned? Firstly, taking that initial step is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, that’s perfectly fine—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Secondly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community of students, you’re sure to encounter many who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Strain

The progression from A-levels to university coursework was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. At times, I grappled with self-doubt, particularly when observing others studying intensely. It’s easy to feel inadequate, but one of the crucial lessons I learned is that everyone is navigating similar challenges.

If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others do too. The secret is to seek help—whether it’s from classmates or professors. Developing the ability to ask for support is one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Faculty Support

One of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the remarkable support from the academic staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and are cognizant of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, making sure our concerns were acknowledged.

I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took the plunge and became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the appropriate backing from faculty and fellow students, challenges become far more surmountable. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never alone and that achieving a balance between academic pressures and enjoyment is entirely feasible.

If you’re poised to commence your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that presents itself.
