**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Looking back now, I can see a year that has been rich in personal development, hardships, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

A major hurdle I encountered was the challenge of making new friends. If you are an incoming student, this might also be a significant concern for you. On my first day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I ended up staying in my room all day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, as time went on, I started to cultivate meaningful friendships with fellow students both in my course and throughout the university. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve met some of the closest friends I’ve ever had—people who feel like a second family.

What did I take away from this experience? Taking that initial leap is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find peers who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university studies was another significant challenge. The workload was considerably more intense, and the complexity of the material escalated, especially from the first to the second term. Occasionally, observing others study so adeptly made me question my own capabilities. Nevertheless, I soon became aware that everyone was experiencing their own struggles—if I found a topic difficult, it’s likely others were too.

The best advice I can offer? Seek assistance. Whether from your peers or instructors, seeking support is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the biggest surprises for me was the level of support provided by the teaching staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always receptive to feedback. Although I did not fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had explored this sooner.

At the onset of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be greatly advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with lecturers and academic staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my initial worries were unfounded. The encouragement from both staff and fellow students facilitated my journey through university challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and have figured out how to balance academic demands with enjoyment.

For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and seize every chance for growth.
