**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was set to commence my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, confronting this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my first day in the student residence, prior to the term beginning, I found myself so daunted that I remained in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone.
However, as I sit here now, I can assertively state that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others facing similar situations.
So, what have I learned? Taking that initial step is invariably beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, that’s okay—there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the extensive workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more taxing. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying rigorously.
What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for support is one of the most valuable abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
This leads me to another essential lesson: the remarkable support offered by the staff in the Materials department. They truly desire for students to excel and are aware of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and offered guidance whenever necessary.
Though I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started utilizing it sooner. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to build connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of all the support available—there’s never too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the appropriate support from staff and peers, those apprehensions became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered how to juggle academic demands with enjoyment.
For anyone on the brink of starting their university adventure, my foremost advice is to embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and remember that challenges are simply opportunities for personal growth.
