**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and quiet nature was familiar with. However, reflecting back now, I recognize that this academic year has been packed with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most challenging obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is a common concern among many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently express that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all stemmed from engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally uncertain.

So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking initiative at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to interact with others. Above all, I discovered that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to connect with those who share your perspective.

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the materials. The transition from A-levels was indeed significant, and in some respects, the shift from the first term to the second was even greater. Being placed in such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and fear that you are lagging behind. However, here’s what aided me: remembering that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can virtually assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. This perhaps stands as the most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year—seek help from both your classmates and the faculty without hesitation!

Speaking of faculty, the support provided by the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not embracing it sooner.

At the outset of the year, I took a bold step by volunteering as a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and this is one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself. My primary takeaway from this role is to utilize all available support—there’s no such thing as receiving too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. Numerous support systems—ranging from faculty to fellow students—are available to alleviate those worries. I’ve discerned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying my time with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
