### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what the future held. As someone who had previously been timid and introverted, adapting to an entirely new setting felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I perceive a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may be among your foremost worries as well. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted that I isolated myself in my room for the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, here I am today, proudly stating that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I have ever known. Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and it only required stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar situations.
What have I taken away from this? The most crucial action you can take is to make that first move. If readiness is an issue, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and occasions to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a heterogeneous student populace, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Coping with the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the coursework. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when observing my peers studying and feeling as though I was falling behind.
What aided me in persevering was the acknowledgment that I wasn’t alone—many of my fellow students were grappling with similar issues. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Be it from classmates or instructors, reaching out for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
#### The Value of Finding Assistance
This brings me to my next point: the phenomenal support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely desires for students to thrive and welcomes feedback with open arms. They recognize the challenges we encounter and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have realized that the fears and trepidations I harbored before commencing university were, for the most part, unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic challenges with enjoyment.
For anyone about to begin their university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: make that leap, seek help when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you just might discover a second family along the way.
