**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what the future held. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat timid and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year that has been rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I isolated myself in my room for the entire day, feeling too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The crucial lesson I took away? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. And above all, be authentic. With such a heterogeneous student community, you’re sure to discover others who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was getting used to the heightened academic workload and complexity of university studies. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more intense. At times, I questioned my abilities, particularly when I observed others appearing more composed in their studies.
What aided me during this time was the realization that I was not the only one—many of my classmates faced similar difficulties. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, pursuing help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Help
This leads me to another crucial insight: the remarkable support network available within the Materials department. The faculty truly care about the academic success and well-being of students. They comprehend the challenges we encounter and maintain transparent communication throughout the year.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support resources until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so sooner. One of the finest decisions I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the faculty, and participating in these opportunities can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of all available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I have learned that the fears and worries I harbored before entering university were mostly unfounded. With the right support from both staff and fellow students, I managed to face the challenges and maximize my experience. Most importantly, I discovered that I am never genuinely alone and that it is entirely feasible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying a rich and rewarding university life.
