**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and a hint of apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of launching into my initial year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been timid and introverted, embarking on this new adventure felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as a significant worry. On my first day in student housing, I was so anxious that I remained in my room all day, too hesitant to introduce myself to anyone. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The crucial lesson I derived from this experience is that taking the initiative is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be various ice-breaking activities and chances to mingle with others in similar situations. Most importantly, just be authentic—Imperial is home to a myriad of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to connect with kindred spirits.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was pronounced, and transitioning from the first to the second term was even more taxing. In such circumstances, it’s easy to feel inadequate, particularly when observing others studying fervently.
What aided me through this period was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s highly likely others are too. The most effective approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting facets of my program has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback regarding any challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner.
In the early stages, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the teaching staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My principal takeaway? Leverage the support accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate the hurdles. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is entirely achievable.
