**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite reserved, entering this new phase of my life felt daunting. In hindsight, I now recognize a year abundant with personal development, difficulties, and a plethora of unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major hurdle I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you are considering this journey, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my very first day in student housing, I was so apprehensive that I remained in my room throughout the day, too anxious to meet anyone. However, looking at today, I can proudly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has transformed into a second home for me, and it merely required stepping beyond my comfort realm and initiating small chats with individuals in similar circumstances. My pivotal lesson? Take the initiative early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be various icebreaker events and chances to connect with new people. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial boasts a diverse crowd, and you’re likely to connect with friends who think alike.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another substantial obstacle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and assuming they have everything under control.
What aided me was the epiphany that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are also grappling with it. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Staff and Well-being Programs
Among the most comforting elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They sincerely desire for their students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback and issues. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step and became a well-being representative for my group. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Utilize the support available—there’s no such thing as excessive help.
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve discovered that many of the apprehensions I harbored before entering university were unfounded. With proper support—from both faculty and fellow students—those anxieties dissipated swiftly. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is attainable.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my suggestion is straightforward: seize the opportunities, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience.
