**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was in store. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in such a setting was well beyond my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what exactly has this year revealed to me, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating challenges of beginning university for me was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a concern of yours as well. I recall my first day of moving into the residence hall, just days before the term officially commenced. I spent the entire day retreating into my room, too frightened to step outside and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at the university and in my program.
What transformed? I took a risk and initiated small talk with others who were feeling just as apprehensive as I was. I’ve discovered a second family during my time at Imperial. So, what’s the takeaway? It’s essential to take that initial step at the outset of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a wide array of individuals within the course and the university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Academic Hurdles: Navigating the Workload
Another major impediment was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-level studies, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into this environment can put a strain on your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as though you aren’t keeping pace.
What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same issue. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This may be one of the most vital lessons I garnered during my first year. Don’t hesitate to contact your classmates or faculty when you’re facing difficulties.
### Assistance from the Staff: An Essential Resource
On the topic of staff, the backing from the Materials department has been extraordinary. They sincerely desire students to flourish and are fully cognizant of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, there was consistent communication between faculty and students regarding any obstacles we were facing.
I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This role helped me to connect with the staff better, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous decisions you can make for yourself. My key message here is to make the most of the support that’s accessible to you. You can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Nerves and Flourishing
In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are countless support resources available, both from staff and fellow students, that can help alleviate those concerns. I’ve come to understand that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy myself even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
