**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. In retrospect, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and cherished memories. So, what have I discovered, and what’s my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the significant obstacles I encountered involved forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the semester starting, I was so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.
Now, reflecting on my journey, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has truly become a second home, and it all began with stepping out of my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who shared my situation.
What’s the takeaway from this experience? Taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge lay in adjusting to the rigorous workload and heightened complexity of university-level studies. The transition from A-levels was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when observing others studying diligently while you struggle to keep pace.
What assisted me in this regard was the realization that many students are experiencing similar challenges. If you find a topic difficult, there’s a good chance others are too. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching personnel. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can develop during your first year.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most delightful revelations of my first year was the level of support offered by the Materials Science department staff. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and always welcome feedback. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our queries and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until well into the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. One of my best choices was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can substantially enrich your university experience. My primary lesson? Make the most of the resources available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the anxieties and apprehensions I experienced prior to starting university were mostly unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you through any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never isolated and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life while balancing the stressors of exams and deadlines.
For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that first leap, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that presents itself.
