**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding the future. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Stepping into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I now recognize a year abundant in personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant source of anxiety when starting university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate with you as well. On the day I moved into my dorm, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with assurance that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, all sparked by taking small steps—beginning with simple exchanges with those who shared my experiences.

So, what has this taught me? First and foremost, taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the most effective thing you can do is to be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

### Adapting to Academic Pressures

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated when surrounded by diligent classmates, and there were times I questioned my capabilities.

What propelled me forward was the understanding that I was not alone—many others were grappling with the same topics. The crucial lesson I absorbed was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help was instrumental to my academic success.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

The faculty in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They genuinely care about student success and recognize the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication, making sure our concerns were addressed.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. One of the most significant steps I took was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly improve your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support offered—you can never receive too much help!

### Final Thoughts

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. Numerous support systems are in place, from staff to fellow students, to facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking forward, I feel more assured and eager for what lies ahead. To any prospective students feeling apprehensive about beginning university—embrace that leap, seek assistance, and cherish the journey. You won’t regret it!
