### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and enthusiasm as I readied myself to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. However, reflecting on my first year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in student housing, retreating to my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, over the course of weeks, I gradually established meaningful connections—some of the best friendships I’ve ever formed.

What did I learn from this experience? Firstly, taking that brave first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be many ice-breaking events and opportunities to meet others. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to the Academic Rigor

The shift from A-levels to university coursework was an additional major challenge. The increase in workload and complexity was significant, particularly between the first and second terms. There were moments of self-doubt, particularly when observing others study with confidence. However, it soon dawned on me that we were all sharing similar struggles—if I found a topic difficult, it was likely that others did too.

The most important lesson I gleaned was the value of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or instructors, asking for help made a considerable difference. If you’re beginning university, don’t shy away from reaching out—there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.

#### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most fulfilling parts of my first year was building relationships with faculty members. The staff in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive and truly invested in student success. They recognize the difficulties we encounter and maintain open lines of communication to address any questions or issues.

Though I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Serving as a well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make full use of the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, my first year has shown me that many of the anxieties I held before entering university were unfounded. With adequate support—from both staff and peers—adapting to university life became significantly more manageable. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that even amidst academic demands, it’s possible to relish the experience and seize every opportunity.

If you’re on the brink of starting your university adventure, welcome the challenges that lie ahead. Take that leap, don’t hesitate to seek help when necessary, and remember—you’re never alone in this journey.
