**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubt, and trepidation regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, entering this new phase felt like a daunting task. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what have I discovered, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant hurdle I encountered at the outset was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day in my accommodation—I spent the entire day alone in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to the present day, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The main lesson? Take that initial step without delay. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re likely to find peers with similar interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and the learning curve between the first and second terms was even steeper. At times, observing others study so effectively led me to question my own competence.

What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others were struggling too. The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or academic staff. Seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Interacting with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, one of the most reassuring features of my course has been the exceptional staff. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the difficulties we encounter. They are always receptive to feedback and ready to help.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form connections with faculty members. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key insight? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to beginning university was largely unwarranted. There are countless support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to help you through the transition. More importantly, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it’s possible to manage academic demands while enjoying my university life.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and make the most of every chance you receive. You’ll be amazed at the growth you’ll experience along the way.
