**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been somewhat introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary obstacles I confronted early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate as one of your chief concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of encountering new faces that I isolated myself in my room the entire day, sidestepping social situations. However, as the year unfolded, I discovered numerous friendships—some of the most rewarding I’ve ever established.

What did I come to understand? Taking that initial leap is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a heterogeneous student population, you are certain to find peers who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-level studies to university academics posed another considerable challenge. The increased workload and heightened complexity of the subjects, especially transitioning from the first to the second term, could easily induce feelings of being overwhelmed and self-doubt, particularly when observing others studying fervently.

What assisted me in navigating this period? Reminding myself that I wasn’t alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely others were grappling with it as well. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Requesting help is not an indication of weakness but a vital component of the learning process.

### The Value of Engaging with Faculty

One of the most enriching aspects of my first year was the encouragement from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely prioritize students’ success and well-being. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and foster open dialogue throughout the academic year.

Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative for my year allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Familiarizing oneself with your professors and academic mentors can significantly impact your experience, and I earnestly urge new students to capitalize on the support that is readily available.

### Main Lessons from My First Year

In contemplating my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was largely unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist—both from staff and fellow students—to facilitate the transition. I’ve also recognized that I am never genuinely alone in my challenges, and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is indeed feasible.

To anyone on the verge of starting their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, seek support when necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. It’s a life-changing experience, and you will emerge stronger on the other side.
