**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year of [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and where do I find myself today?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant obstacle I encountered initially was the struggle to make friends. For prospective students, this might be a concern you share as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into student accommodations—I was so frightened that I spent the entire day holed up in my room, too anxious to engage with anyone.

Now, as I look back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and making casual conversation with others who were in similar situations.

What’s the lesson? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared at the outset, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community of students, you’re sure to find people who share your interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was significant, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to feel overwhelmed and question my capabilities, especially when I noticed others studying and appearing more self-assured.

What helped me navigate this? Reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If I found something challenging, it was likely that others were, too. The most beneficial thing I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff.

### The Significance of Asking for Help

Speaking of staff, one of the most valuable aspects of my first year was realizing just how supportive the Materials Science department is. The lecturers and personnel sincerely want students to thrive, and they recognize the obstacles we face. They maintain open lines of communication and offer various support mechanisms throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Seize the opportunities for support—you can never have too much assistance.

### Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was mostly unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and classmates, to smoothen the transition. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve found ways to manage academic challenges while enjoying university life.

For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to step beyond your comfort zone. You’ll likely be astonished by how much you evolve along the way.
