**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the future. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, and facing the unknown was intimidating for someone like me, who has always been quite reserved. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it as a period rich with growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might also be among your top concerns. On my first day in the student dormitory, I was so daunted by the idea of meeting new faces that I spent the entire day confined in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Yet, as I sit here now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what’s the takeaway? First, taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to socialize. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re certain to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, especially when you observe others engrossed in their studies.
What got me through this was realizing that we are all navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s highly likely that others are, too. The essential lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or your instructors, reaching out for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
This brings me to another vital point—the amazing support offered by the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely wants students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and communication. They recognize the struggles we face and are eager to assist.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support provided until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. At the year’s start, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and support staff can be immensely advantageous, and there are numerous methods to achieve this. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources available to you—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to embarking on university was mostly unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, both from staff and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone. Despite the stresses of exams and deadlines, I’ve managed to find enjoyment in my university experience, and I wouldn’t alter a thing.
If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace every opportunity that presents itself.
