**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the quest for friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your foremost worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day tucked in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who have become like a second family.
What lesson did I glean? Taking that pivotal first step is essential. Even if you’re unsure or uneasy at the onset, rest assured—there will be ample opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse group of peers throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your vibe.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and seemingly comprehending concepts more swiftly than you do.
What assisted me in navigating this was recognizing that everyone is on a similar path. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are facing challenges too. The vital takeaway? Don’t be hesitant to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, reach out for support without reservation. This has been, without a doubt, the most critical lesson I gleaned in my first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they nurtured open lines of communication with us, addressing our apprehensions and providing support. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral assistance available until the year’s end, which is something I regret not doing sooner.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to foster stronger connections with the faculty, which proved to be invaluable. There are myriad methods to cultivate relationships with staff, and doing so can vastly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during my university tenure was largely misplaced. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I’m never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned to juggle enjoying my time with managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
