### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
**By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)**
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what the future would bring. I was on the cusp of beginning my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt quite formidable. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it has been a period rich in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current position?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges of starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your primary anxieties. On my inaugural day in student housing, I found myself spending hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and say hello. Yet, as I write this now, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
Imperial has truly felt like a second home, and all it required was a little chit-chat with others who were equally new. My greatest lesson? Take that risk early on. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find peers who resonate with your interests and principles.
#### Adapting to Academic Rigors
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous coursework and academic expectations. The transition from A-levels was quite stark, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence wasn’t always easy, especially when I observed my peers studying vigorously and felt like I was falling behind.
What motivated me to persevere was the realization that we were all navigating the same challenges. If I struggled to comprehend a topic, it was likely that others did too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for help is one of the most essential skills you can hone in your first year.
#### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my program has been the remarkable assistance from the faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and comprehend the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing any issues we raised.
Even though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the position of a year well-being representative enabled me to engage with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with professors, and doing so can significantly enhance your academic experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have enough!
#### Concluding Thoughts
As I look back, this year has illustrated that the anxiety I felt—both before and during my time at university—was often unwarranted. An array of support structures exists, ranging from faculty to fellow students, ensuring no one has to navigate this path in solitude. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.
If you are about to embark on your own university journey, embrace the challenges that await. Take that plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and remember—you are never on this journey alone.
