**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in apprehension, trepidation, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who had always been introspective and quiet, diving into this new experience felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with evolution, obstacles, and a fair share of enjoyment, I can contemplate the lessons this journey has imparted and my current standing.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents one of the more daunting elements of beginning university life. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just shortly before the term commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and greet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve found a new family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals sharing similar feelings.

What’s the takeaway? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t be disheartened! There are numerous social events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, I learned that being authentically yourself is vital. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being immersed in such a demanding setting can be challenging for your confidence, particularly when observing others study and feeling as though you’re not measuring up. However, a helpful reminder was understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you have difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same struggles.

The most crucial insight I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for assistance is essential. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

### The Value of Staff Support

Regarding staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. They empathize with our circumstances and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year to resolve any concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took the initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My primary lesson here is to seize the support that’s being offered. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that the trepidation I experienced before and during my university journey was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and peers, I recognized that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to find a balance between enjoying my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
