**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, hurdles, and numerous enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself currently?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share the same feelings of nervousness. On my first day at student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a little small talk with others who were in a similar situation. The most significant lesson I’ve learned? Step out of your comfort zone early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect await you. Most importantly, be yourself—Imperial is home to a wide variety of individuals, and you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was another significant challenge. The workload ramped up dramatically, and the leap from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s effortless to feel swamped or doubt your skills when you notice others studying diligently, but the reality is, everyone is grappling with the same trials.
One of the most crucial lessons I learned was to seek assistance. If something is unclear, there’s a good chance others are finding it challenging as well. Don’t hesitate to turn to your classmates or lecturers—asking for help is one of the most vital abilities to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Engaging with Educators
The teaching faculty in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They truly desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and dialogue. While I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous methods to connect with educators, and fostering these connections can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is accessible to you—one can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I have come to realize that the trepidation I experienced before commencing university was mostly unwarranted. Numerous support mechanisms are available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university journey is indeed possible.
If you’re about to embark on your path at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: welcome the challenges, seek support when necessary, and above all, savor the experience!
