**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a wave of nerves, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my inaugural year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize it has been filled with personal growth, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the paramount challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day in student accommodation, I was so daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals that I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself.
Flash forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations and shared experiences. The most significant lesson I learned? Take that first plunge. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be ample ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is packed with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first to second term was even more demanding. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and grasping concepts quicker than you.
What aided me during this period was recognizing that everyone is navigating the same struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are experiencing similar difficulties. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from peers or professors. Learning to reach out for support early on is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Support Networks
One of the most comforting features of my course has been the tremendous support from the teaching staff. The professors are genuinely invested in student success and are always open to conversations regarding any academic or personal challenges we encounter. They comprehend the difficulties we face and actively strive to assist us.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available until the end of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster relationships with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your professors and participating in the available support systems can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Never hesitate to access the resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has taught me that the apprehensions and fears I harbored before starting university were mostly unwarranted. There are myriad support structures available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring no one has to navigate this journey alone. I’ve learned to balance academic demands with enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.
For anyone embarking on their university adventure: take that leap, seek help when needed, and welcome every chance that comes your way. You’ll be astonished at how much you blossom throughout the process.
