**Thoughts on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in an entirely unfamiliar setting felt intimidating. Reflecting back, I now recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the foremost challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this is likely something you’re apprehensive about as well. On the day I settled into my accommodation, right before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at it now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with fellow students in similar situations.
What did I discover? Taking that initial step is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel ready or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and avenues to meet others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Adapting to Academic Expectations
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term presented even greater challenges. It’s all too easy to feel inundated, particularly when observing others study and beginning to question your own proficiency.
What aided me during this time was acknowledging that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something seems unclear, odds are that others are grappling with it too. The best action is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or academic staff. Learning to seek support is among the most vital skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They truly wish for students to excel and recognize the difficulties we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year and are always keen to assist.
I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support offered to me until the year was nearly concluded, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be priceless. There are myriad ways to engage with instructors, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key lesson? Take full advantage of the available help—there’s never too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unwarranted. There are ample support mechanisms in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one needs to feel isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance academic demands with enjoying the university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my message is straightforward: take the plunge, seek assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity that presents itself.
