### Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A year ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the journey that awaited me. I was preparing to embark on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Now reflecting on my experiences, I recognize that the last year has been marked by personal development, various challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in university housing, where I spent most of the time in my room, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I write this today, I can affirm that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

The most significant lesson I learned? Take that initial leap. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others will arise. Above all, be authentic. Given the diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the rigorous curriculum and the greater difficulty of university-level materials. The transition from A-levels to university felt like a huge leap, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying effectively while I struggled with specific topics.

What assisted me in navigating this? Realizing that I was not alone. If I found a concept confusing, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. My best recommendation is to seek assistance—whether it’s from peers or professors. Learning to ask for help early on is one of the most crucial skills to develop in your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most encouraging elements of my course has been the remarkable support offered by the teaching staff. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and conversations regarding our issues. Although I didn’t fully advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not seeking it out sooner.

At the year’s beginning, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and doing so can have a significant impact on your university experience. My major takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of my anxieties prior to starting university were unfounded. There’s a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to balance academic pressures with personal fulfillment, even amidst exams and deadlines.

If you’re about to begin your university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when needed, and embrace the adventure that lies ahead. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you may just have the most amazing time of your life.
