**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the future. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously reserved and timid self was accustomed to. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was the challenge of connecting with new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may resonate as one of your primary worries. I vividly recall my first day moving into student housing—I holistically remained in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, reflecting on my journey today, I can assert that I’ve formed amazing friendships. Imperial has transformed into a second home, and it all began with a simple exchange of conversation with others sharing my circumstances.
So, what takeaway can I offer? Firstly, taking that initial step is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to meet new people. Secondly, being genuine is paramount. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge involved acclimating to the rigorous workload and heightened level of difficulty. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more extreme. It’s common to feel inundated and question your competencies, especially when observing others deeply engaged in their studies. Nonetheless, one crucial lesson I gleaned is that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find a concept challenging, it’s likely that others are too.
The key lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether from classmates or the faculty, asking for assistance is vital. Learning to reach out for help early on can profoundly influence your academic path.
### The Significance of Connecting with Faculty
On the topic of assistance, the Materials Science and Engineering faculty are remarkable. They sincerely desire students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they maintained ongoing communication, swiftly addressing our concerns and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the final stages of the year, and I wish I had engaged sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are various avenues to connect with your instructors, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My advice? Utilize the resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Final Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has revealed that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unwarranted. A plethora of support exists, both from educators and fellow students, to aid in navigating the intricacies of university life. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never really alone. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I have discovered ways to relish my time at Imperial, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything else.
