**Reflecting on My Initial Year of Materials Science and Engineering**

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. As someone who had always been quiet and introspective, stepping into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary difficulties I encountered was connecting with others. If you’re an incoming student, this concern might resonate with you as well. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. However, looking at how far I’ve come, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.

The essential lesson I took away? Take that plunge. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to connect. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find those who align with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level studies. The leap from A-levels was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more profound. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others seemingly more at ease with their studies.

What assisted me was the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, likely others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Developing the skill to ask for help is one of the most crucial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my program has been the tremendous support from the faculty. They sincerely want their students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. Even though I didn’t fully utilize the support systems available until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty and support personnel, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My most important lesson? Make the most of the resources on hand—having support is always beneficial.

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxieties surrounding the transition to university are often unwarranted and that support is always accessible, whether through staff or fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s entirely feasible to relish the university experience even amidst the strains of exams and deadlines.

For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my message is straightforward: welcome the experience, reach out for help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that first step. You’ll be amazed at how much you evolve throughout the journey.
