**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, immersing myself in the university experience felt incredibly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what did I truly gain from this experience, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was the quest to forge new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely on your mind as well. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day hidden away in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through a few straightforward conversations with others who shared my apprehensions.

So, what insights did I gain from this episode? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. Regardless of whether you feel prepared or at ease, there’s no need for concern—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Challenges

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. Existing in such a rigorous academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence. You may observe others studying and feel as if you’re falling behind. However, here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most valuable lesson I gained in my first year was to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, demonstrating empathy and providing assistance. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to better connect with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway is to fully utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has revealed that the anxiety I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive array of support options accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never actually alone. I’ve also discovered how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines while savoring the university experience.

By embracing the challenges and taking those initial leaps, I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated. If you’re about to begin your own journey, keep in mind: be true to yourself, seek help, and don’t hesitate to take that leap.
