**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. As an individual who had always felt shy and introverted, embarking on this new phase was daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. What lessons have I gleaned, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the university’s onset was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day in student housing, retreating to my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships in my life.
I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, which all began with brief chats with others in similar circumstances. The most vital lesson I’ve learned? Make the effort early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. Above all, be authentic—Imperial boasts a vibrant mix of individuals, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the demands of university academia. The transition from A-levels to college was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when observing others studying while I felt I was falling behind.
What aided me during this period was the understanding that I wasn’t the only one facing difficulties. If I struggled with a topic, it’s likely that others were as well. The best suggestion I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, seeking help is one of the most useful abilities you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Help
This leads me to another essential insight—the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are consistently receptive to feedback. They recognize the challenges we encounter and actively strive to assist us.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to interact with faculty and better comprehend the resources at hand. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and support staff can prove to be incredibly beneficial, and I strongly advise leveraging the assistance provided.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. A plethora of support exists, from both staff and fellow students, to navigate through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone. Amid the pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to enjoy my university journey, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
