**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had been somewhat timid and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was the task of forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might be a primary concern for you as well. I vividly recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the most rewarding friendships ever. Imperial has become my second home, and all it required was a little small talk with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
The key takeaway? Take the plunge early. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are bound to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when noticing others studying with apparent confidence.
What assisted me was recognizing that every student faces difficulties at some stage. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others share the same confusion. The most beneficial action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or educators. Learning to ask for help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the exceptional support provided by the faculty. They truly desire students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. At the start, I took an initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. Cultivating relationships with your professors and academic advisors can be remarkably beneficial, and I strongly advise utilizing the support options available. You can never have an excess of help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I realize that many of the fears I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. With adequate backing from both staff and peers, overcoming challenges becomes significantly more manageable. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I am never alone on this journey. It is feasible to balance academic obligations with social life and personal health, and I’ve learned how to savor university life despite the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
