**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quiet and introverted, the idea of entering this new phase was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the academic year, I view it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Making Connections: Surmounting the Initial Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently a major worry for newcomers, and if you find yourself reading this as a potential student, it may be a source of concern for you as well. On the first day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term commencing, I spent the entire day concealing myself in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are plenty of introductory events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is vital. With such a varied array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
### Managing the Academic Load: A Steep Learning Experience
Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying intensely and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others feel the same way. The most crucial lesson I learned in my inaugural year is to seek assistance. Whether from your peers or the faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out.
### Guidance from the Faculty: An Invaluable Asset
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely want to see their students thrive and are fully aware of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained regular communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until the year was nearly over, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level. This was an invaluable experience, and I strongly recommend getting to know your professors and tutors. They are there to assist you, and you can never have too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support options from both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m not truly alone. More significantly, I’ve learned how to harmonize enjoying university life with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
