**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was a significant departure from my previously shy and introverted nature. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making connections. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of commencing university life, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be a concern for you as well. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to classes beginning, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to step out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with certainty that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, both within this university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from brief conversations with others who were equally anxious. So, what was my takeaway? I found that taking a chance early in the year is often the most effective strategy. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaking gatherings and chances to engage with fellow students. Above all, I learned that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another major obstacle has been handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a distinct leap from A-level studies, and in some instances, an even greater shift between the first and second terms. Being immersed in such an intense academic setting can occasionally undermine your self-assurance. You might observe others diligently studying and feel inadequate.

What assisted me during those challenging times was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something doesn’t make sense to you, chances are there are others feeling the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year—don’t shy away from asking for support from both your peers and faculty!

### Assistance from Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the instructors in the Materials department are remarkable. They earnestly want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year to address our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed them earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, a relationship that proved tremendously beneficial. There are ample opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for your well-being. My primary takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxious feelings surrounding the entry into university are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated by the extensive support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying my time while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
