**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself grappling with nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Leaving my comfort zone was not something I was accustomed to, as I had always been rather reserved. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous rewarding moments. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the beginning was the challenge of making friends. If you are an incoming student, this may also be a significant worry for you. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the entire day confined to my room, feeling too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, now as I write this, I can proudly state that I have formed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has turned into my second home, and it all began with initiating simple conversations with fellow students who shared my feelings.

So, what have I taken away from this experience? First, making that first move is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous social events and chances to get to know others. Second, being authentic is essential. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic rigor and the higher level of content. The transition from A-levels was apparent, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others putting in intensive study hours. However, one key lesson I absorbed was that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are too.

The solution to tackling this obstacle is straightforward: don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or instructors, reaching out for support is vital. Learning to ask questions and clarify uncertainties early can significantly impact your confidence and comprehension.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most beneficial facets of my first year has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly wants students to thrive and is always willing to engage in conversations about any academic or personal challenges. Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had done so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can profoundly enrich your university experience. My main takeaway? Utilize the support system around you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support structures available, from faculty to fellow students, to help you navigate the complexities of university life. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone. In spite of the stresses of exams and deadlines, I have discovered ways to savor my time at Imperial, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my guidance is clear: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the path ahead. You will grow in ways you never anticipated and forge unforgettable memories along the way.
