**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and reserved, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I can see it filled with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are a potential student, this could be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I found the thought of introducing myself so daunting that I remained in my room the whole day. However, now sitting here, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with peers in similar situations.
The vital lesson I gleaned? Take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another prominent challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the move from the first to the second term posed even greater difficulties. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others engrossed in their studies.
What guided me through this period was the realization that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find a concept elusive, many others likely do as well. The crucial point is to seek help—whether from fellow students or instructors. Cultivating the ability to request assistance is one of the most beneficial skills you can acquire during your first year.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the remarkable assistance from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in student success and are always receptive to feedback. They acknowledge the challenges we encounter and actively strive to provide support.
Although I did not fully utilize the pastoral resources until later in the year, I wish I had capitalized on them earlier. Initially, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are several ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your time at university. My most significant takeaway? Take full advantage of the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Final Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, it has become clear that the fears and worries I held prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. There are endless support systems available, from both faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate through challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone. Despite the stress of exams and deadlines, I have discovered ways to enjoy my time at university and make the most of my experience.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is this: take that initial step, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity that arises. You will likely be amazed at how much you develop along the way.
