**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was intimidating, particularly for someone who has always leaned towards being reserved. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered in the early days was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my first day in student housing, confined to my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The main takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you’re feeling doubtful, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to foster connections. Most importantly, stay true to yourself—Imperial is populated with individuals from varied backgrounds, and you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework presented another challenge. The workload escalated, and the complexity intensified, particularly between the first and second terms. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others study fervently. However, I discovered that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are, too.
The best advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or your teachers, reaching out for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most delightful surprises of my first year was the unwavering support from the Materials Science department. The staff is genuinely invested in our success and are always receptive to feedback and discussions about any obstacles we encounter.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Acting as a year well-being representative allowed me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to connect with lecturers and support personnel, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key lesson? Utilize the resources available—you can never have too much support!
### Final Thoughts
Looking back, this year has illustrated that the fears and worries I held before commencing university were mostly exaggerated. With the proper guidance from staff and fellow students, I successfully navigated challenges and genuinely enjoyed my time. I’ve recognized that I’m not alone, and I’ve learned how to balance academic pressures with enjoyment and personal development.
If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, my advice is straightforward: embrace the experience, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, be yourself. You can do this!
