**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, stepping into the unknown felt like an overwhelming challenge. Now, as I reflect, I recognize that this academic year has been one of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
### Building Friendships: The Primary Challenge
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was creating friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too nervous to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances.
So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances for connection with fellow students. Most importantly, I realized that above all, you should remain true to yourself. With such a diverse community of people across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter individuals who align with you.
### Overcoming the Academic Workload
Another challenge I tackled was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some instances, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and doubt your abilities. But here’s the truth: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are likely having the same issue. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This may very well be the most essential lesson to embrace in your first year—don’t shy away from reaching out for help from your classmates or the faculty!
### The Value of Support
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are phenomenal. They sincerely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They demonstrate empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year to address any concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are multiple ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My key takeaway from this journey is to maximize the support that’s accessible to you—you can’t have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. Numerous support systems are in place, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you face the challenges ahead. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoying life while managing the pressures of exams and deadlines.
