**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and countless memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One significant challenge I encountered early on was the difficulty of making friends. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your main worries. I recall my first day moving into my accommodations—I was so overwhelmed that I stayed in my room the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.
Nevertheless, as time progressed, I began to cultivate meaningful friendships with classmates and other students throughout the university. Today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve met some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had. Imperial has truly become a second home, and all it required was to step out of my comfort zone and engage in small talk with others experiencing the same feelings.
So, what have I learned? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t think you’re ready, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with new individuals. Second, the best advice is to be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of students, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Expectations
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the demands of coursework and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel swamped, especially when you observe others studying and begin to doubt your own capabilities.
What helped me navigate this was the awareness that everyone has their struggles at some point. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The important thing is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for support is one of the most indispensable skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Assistance
Speaking of assistance, one of the standout features of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the faculty. They genuinely care about the success of students and are consistently ready to provide support. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, ensuring our concerns were addressed.
I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available to me until late in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are various ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My major takeaway? Always make use of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back, this year has shown me that the fears and apprehensions I experienced before starting university were mostly unwarranted. With the proper support from faculty and peers, those initial worries quickly diminished. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone and that enjoying university life is possible even amid the stress of exams and deadlines.
For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You will find your niche, just as I did.
