**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and doubts about what was to come. I was preparing to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has typically been shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a future student, you might share this concern. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted that I stayed in my room for the entire day, too shy to reach out to anyone. Yet, fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever had.
Imperial has developed into a second home for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties. The most important lesson I took away? Make that leap early. Even if it feels premature, numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Above all, just remain authentic—Imperial is filled with a wide array of individuals, and you are sure to encounter others who share your passions.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Adapting to the workload and the complexity of the coursework presented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels was significant, and even more so between the first and second terms. At times, it was easy to feel inundated and question my own capabilities, particularly when observing my peers studying diligently.
What enabled me to persevere was recognizing that everyone experienced similar difficulties. If I was struggling with a concept, it’s likely others were too. The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or teaching staff, seeking help is one of the most crucial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Seeking Guidance
On the topic of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They truly desire for students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in constant contact with us, addressing our worries and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. One of the standout choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to engage with staff members, turning out to be a rewarding experience. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with lecturers and support staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to commencing university was entirely normal—and often unfounded. There are ample support systems available, from both staff and fellow students, to guide you through the complexities of university life.
Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone. Despite the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to savor my time at Imperial, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.
If you’re on the brink of starting your own university adventure, my straightforward advice is this: take the leap, seek help, and welcome every opportunity that comes your way.
