**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reticent, the notion of plunging into something unfamiliar was overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I perceive a time rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most daunting factors of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, right before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel akin to family.

What aided me in breaking the ice? It began with light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive. I discovered that taking that first step at the start of the year is vital. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is essential. With a variety of individuals enrolled in the course and university, you’ll surely encounter those who share your passions and principles.

### Confronting the Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more significant. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic atmosphere can shake your self-assurance. You might glance around and think that everyone else is handling it better than you. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with a concept, it’s likely that others do too.

The most critical lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’re not expected to have all the answers, and reaching out for support is an essential element of the educational journey.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the struggles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always willing to address any issues.

One thing I wish I had pursued earlier was fully utilizing the available pastoral support. I didn’t begin to take advantage of it until the latter part of the year, but it turned out to be transformative. At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me establish closer connections with the faculty, which was invaluable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My advice? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Reflections

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also savoring the university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own journey, keep in mind: take that plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You’ve got this!
