**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubts about the future. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had perpetually been introverted and withdrawn, venturing into the unfamiliar was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I can undoubtedly say it’s been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Confronting the Challenge of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating challenges of starting university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your primary concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who feel like family.
So, how did this change occur? It all began with small interactions, like engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing the same feelings. I learned that taking that initial leap of faith is essential. If you’re not quite ready to jump in straight away, don’t worry—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others are available. Most importantly, I found that authenticity is the best strategy. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the demands of the curriculum and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more significant. Staying confident wasn’t always straightforward, particularly while comparing myself to peers who appeared to have everything sorted out.
What aided my perseverance was the understanding that everyone else was experiencing similar challenges. If I was struggling to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most important lesson I acquired during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or faculty. Requesting assistance isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a vital aspect of flourishing in this setting.
### Fostering Relationships with Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are countless avenues to become acquainted with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and throughout university—were unwarranted. There is ample support accessible, whether from faculty or fellow students, to guide you through any difficulties. This year has taught me that I am never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of happiness and enjoyment.
If you’re preparing to embark on your university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that with time, effort, and support, you will discover your niche and flourish.
