**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year scholar in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quite shy and introverted, plunging into university life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and a good amount of enjoyment. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making New Friends

A major hurdle I encountered early on was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and all it took was a little small talk with others who were equally as apprehensive.

So, what did I glean from this experience? The crucial element is to take that first step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at facilitating connections with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find those who connect with you.

### Navigating the Academic Leap

Another notable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a discernible leap from A-level studies, and an even sharper transition from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such a setting can easily rattle your confidence, especially when you observe others diligently studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.

What helped me endure this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you’re struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The most vital lesson I acquired during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification or assistance when you need it.

### Significance of Support Systems

This leads me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They wholeheartedly want you to thrive and recognize the obstacles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier.

At the year’s outset, I made a bold choice by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to develop a deeper connection with the faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway from this is to utilize the support at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive help!

### Concluding Remarks

In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With ample support from both faculty and fellow students, I realized that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
