**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was set to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. However, in retrospect, I can clearly see the significant growth I’ve experienced over the past academic year. It has been a period of personal evolution, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my standing today?
### Making Connections: Conquering Initial Anxieties
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early on was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a concern for you. On my first day in my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, both in my course and throughout the university.
What did I take away from this? The essence lies in taking that first bold step. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t worry—there will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and chances to meet others. And most importantly, be genuine. With diverse personalities and backgrounds at university, you’re bound to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Coping with the Workload: It’s Acceptable to Seek Assistance
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overawed or doubt your capabilities when observing others engrossed in their studies. However, a reminder that aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too.
The most crucial lesson I discovered during my first year is the importance of asking for assistance. Whether you seek help from peers or faculty, don’t hesitate to reach out. Everyone is here to uplift one another, and learning to ask for help is an essential skill to cultivate early on.
### Staff Support: Don’t Hesitate to Seek Aid
On the topic of support, I can’t stress enough how fantastic the staff in the Materials department truly are. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are well-aware of the obstacles students encounter. They routinely check in with us throughout the year to tackle any issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which has proven immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and nurturing those relationships is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My greatest insight? Don’t hesitate to take advantage of the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embrace the Experience
Overall, this year has enlightened me that the anxiety I felt prior to entering university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There are numerous support structures in place, from faculty to fellow students, so you’re never truly isolated. I’ve also discovered how to balance enjoying my time with navigating the inevitable stress associated with exams and deadlines.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, and I look forward to discovering what the future has in store as I advance in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
