### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*Penned by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by nervousness, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was about to commence my first year pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university. As a naturally shy and introverted person, entering this new phase felt daunting. In retrospect, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A significant challenge I encountered early on was developing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar situations.

So, what have I learned? Taking the initiative is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

#### Adapting to the Academic Rigor

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands of the coursework and its complexity. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more rigorous. It’s easy to become stressed or question your capabilities when observing others study with confidence.

What assisted me during this time was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are that others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or educators. Mastering the skill of seeking help is one of the most crucial abilities you can foster during your first year.

#### The Value of Support from Faculty

One of the most positive aspects of my experience has been the remarkable support from the teaching staff within the Materials department. They sincerely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They consistently engage with us and provide a variety of support throughout the year.

I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started sooner. At the year’s onset, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

#### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has revealed to me that many of the fears I harbored prior to beginning university were baseless. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to juggle academic demands while savoring my time at university.

For those preparing to embark on their own university path, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, reach out for help when needed, and fully embrace the journey. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
