**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what awaited me. As a freshman ready to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I found myself stepping into unknown terrain. Having always been a quiet and timid individual, plunging into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the past year, I perceive it as a time brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day settling into my student residence—I was so daunted that I remained in my room the entire day, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships in my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling the same way.
So, what has this taught me? Firstly, taking that first step is always rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared right off the bat, don’t be concerned—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the best approach is to be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap between the first and second terms. Being in such a demanding academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence—you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison.
What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If you find something confusing, it’s highly likely that others are experiencing the same struggles. The most vital lesson I learned was to reach out for assistance—whether from peers or educators. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that will contribute to your success.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
One of the most beneficial aspects of my first year was the remarkable assistance from the Materials Science faculty. They truly desire for students to excel and are always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the challenges we encounter and maintain regular communication to tackle any issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with instructors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I held prior to entering university were unwarranted. There are ample support systems established, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to manage academic expectations while enjoying the university experience.
If you’re on the cusp of starting your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help when necessary, and above all, be yourself. You’ll find your niche, just as I did.
