**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Challenge

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re reading this as a future student, you might share the same concern. On my very first day settling into accommodation, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly confirm that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it only took a few discussions with others facing similar situations.

So, what did I discover? I realized that taking that first step is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Workload

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump between the first and second terms. Being in such a demanding environment can occasionally shake your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. The most significant lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you’re facing difficulties.

### Guidance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been exceptional. They truly want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties that students encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication about any challenges we were facing. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the year’s start, I took a brave step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to build a better rapport with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I highly encourage doing so—it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My main takeaway here is to utilize the support that’s accessible. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was mostly unwarranted. There are extensive support systems in place, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you along your journey. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone in confronting challenges, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying university life with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
