**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, plunging into the depths of university life felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyable moments, I find myself contemplating the lessons I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making New Friends

One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might feel the same apprehension. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, I spent hours retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But now, looking back, I can assure you that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever encountered.

These bonds didn’t materialize overnight; they commenced with small gestures—casual chats with others experiencing the same novelty and uncertainty as I was. Gradually, these interactions developed into a close-knit community here at Imperial. What I gained from this experience? Taking that first leap of faith is essential. Even if you think you’re not prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, I discovered the importance of being true to myself. Given the diverse community at Imperial, you will inevitably find others who correspond to your passions and principles.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It can feel intimidating or cause you to doubt your skills when you’re surrounded by high-performing peers.

What aided me during these times was the understanding that I wasn’t the only one struggling. Everyone faced similar difficulties, and if I found something confusing, it was likely that others did too. The essential takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for assistance can significantly impact your experience.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They truly care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and offered unwavering support.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral resources available until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the bold choices I made at the year’s start, allowing me to forge meaningful relationships with faculty. These connections were invaluable, and I would highly recommend anyone to make the most of the support and opportunities accessible. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned so much. The apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the plethora of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I learned how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and laughter.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey marked by growth, resilience, and exploration. If you’re about to launch into your own university experience, remember that challenges are inevitable—but so too are the chances to learn, connect, and excel.
