**Reflections on My Initial Year in Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming up. I was on the brink of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. Daring to step into the unknown was not typical for my previously shy and reserved nature. Now, reflecting back, I recognize an academic year rich in personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. But what have I taken away from this year, and what is my current perspective?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, chances are it’s something you’re anxious about as well. On the day I moved into my residence, just a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged incredibly deep friendships, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial.
So, what insight did I gain? I came to understand that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably the best strategy. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, rest assured! There will be an abundance of ice-breakers and activities crafted to facilitate connections with others. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse student population, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Workload and Academic Expectations
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a palpable transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in overcoming this challenge was the acknowledgment that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are grappling with the same issue. The most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching staff, don’t hold back from reaching out when you face difficulties.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
This brings me to my next point: the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they consistently communicated with us, responding to our concerns and providing assistance. I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s start, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect better with the staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are countless opportunities to foster relationships with faculty, and I highly encourage doing so. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the support accessible to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
As I look back on my first year, I’ve discovered that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring you are never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with the enjoyment of university life. Above all, it has demonstrated that taking risks and stepping out of my comfort zone can result in some of the most fulfilling experiences.
