**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing beyond my comfort zone was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was the task of making friends. If you are a prospective student, this may also be one of your main worries. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can wholeheartedly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve had. Imperial has transformed into my second family, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what have I taken away from this experience? That initial leap is always worthwhile. If you feel unprepared, fret not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, remember to be yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was evident, and the learning curve from the first term to the second was even steeper. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others studying diligently. However, one of the most crucial lessons I learned was that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are too.

The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or teaching staff. Learning to reach out for support early is one of the most vital skills to acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department genuinely excels. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the trials we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

I didn’t utilize the pastoral support available to me until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before and during my university journey was largely unfounded. There are abundant support systems established, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never alone, and it is indeed possible to successfully manage academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university life.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and welcome every opportunity that presents itself.
