**Insights on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt a whirlwind of nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, entering a completely new setting. As someone who had previously been rather shy and introverted, diving into this experience felt quite overwhelming. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was the task of making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day of moving into student housing—I spent the entire day holed up in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and it only took a little bit of casual conversation with others who were experiencing the same feelings. My key takeaway? Make the effort early on. Even if you don’t feel completely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when you observe others studying fervently.
What aided me during this transition was recognizing that everyone faces difficulties at various points. If a topic eludes your understanding, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the crucial skills you can hone in your first year.
### The Significance of Seeking Help
On the topic of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they kept in regular contact with us to ensure that our concerns were acknowledged.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the support system available until near the year’s end, I wish I would have taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university adventure. My suggestion? Make the most of all the available support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university was mostly unwarranted. There are countless support networks in place, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that no one needs to navigate this journey alone. More importantly, I have learned how to strike a balance between academic pressures and enjoying university life.
If you’re about to embark on your first year, understand that while challenges will arise, so will wonderful opportunities for growth. Take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and above all, savor the experience!
