**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I felt a whirlwind of nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t precisely within my comfort level. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and how far have I come?

### Making Connections: Confronting Initial Apprehensions

One of the biggest challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become a second family at Imperial.

What did I take away from this experience? The secret is to make that move early. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events are organized to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people in your course and at the university, you’ll undoubtedly find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Workload: Reaching Out for Assistance

Another key challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. There was certainly a discernible leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a situation can sometimes shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short.

What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, chances are high that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year—seek support from your peers and faculty without hesitation.

### The Value of Support: Cultivating Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want you to thrive, and they recognize the challenges students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year and are always receptive to our concerns.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members—an invaluable opportunity. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Embrace the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Closing Thoughts: Welcoming the Experience

In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that the unease I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. There are ample support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, that can help alleviate those worries. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly on my own and that it’s entirely possible to savor university life even amidst the demands of assessments and deadlines.

By facing the challenges head-on and taking those crucial first steps, I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated. And I eagerly await what the upcoming years have in store.
